2021 Court Affiliates Virtual Conference
Justice from Anywhere
June 9-10, 2021
1:00 – 5:30 PM EDT (10:00 AM – 2:30 PM PDT)
The Pandemic pushed courts and adjudicatory agencies into the world of modern technology. Numerous judges, court administrators, and lawyers, many of whom were technology skeptics, have concluded that technology is useful, easy, and often more efficient than doing things in a traditional way. Given those conclusions, how should disputes be resolved after the Pandemic? Join us for Justice from Anywhere. We will discuss how courts and agencies can resolve disputes outside the traditional courtroom or hearing room, and consider what the future holds for virtual hearings and trials.
Our first conference afternoon will include our Keynote Speaker, Richard Susskind, a world-renowned legal futurist. Mr. Susskind will address online dispute resolution in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Nicolas W. Vermeys, Dean and Professor at the University of Montreal, will then discuss Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) from his perspective as one of Canada’s leading experts. We will then address the potential use of ODR now and in the next few years.
During our second afternoon, we will address post-Pandemic remote appearances during virtual trials and hearings. Representatives of WebEx, Teams, and Zoom will discuss their technology from a court perspective. We will then hear from three companies that offer court and agency hearing support. Professor Lederer will summarize the results of CLCT’s study of federal adjudicatory agency virtual hearings for the Administrative Conference of the United States. We will end the conference with a discussion to help Court Affiliates prepare for the next few years.
