About the Conference

The combination of technological innovation and lessons learned while coping with the COVID-19 Pandemic have enhanced how we can and use courtrooms. Recognizing that many courts will be renovating current facilities or even building new courthouses, we have designed this conference to assist judges, court administrators, members of court-related agencies, and others in the “court family” to be effective partners in the planning, design, construction, and implementation of new technology-augmented courtrooms.

Conference Sessions Preview

Monday, October 17, 2022 – The Process

The Construction/Renovation Process: A construction or renovation project can be viewed as a complicated and sophisticated dance the details of which must be choreographed to ensure that all parts fit together as effectively as may be possible. This session will identify the elements that make up a construction or renovation project including the stages of the project, the identities and roles of the Stakeholders and Construction Team and the importance of understanding the timeline needed for success.

Programming for Success: Comprehensive planning is essential for the success of any construction or renovation project. Emphasizing the Pre-Design Phase, this session discusses what needs to be done, and by whom to ensure that the project meets the expectations of the Stakeholders. Obtaining “Buy In” by users is a critical part of this process.           

What Type of Courtroom Do We Need? As we have discovered in the Pandemic, today’s courthouse can be a changing environment, and it may not be useful to create fixed-use courtrooms that are not adaptable to change. This session will present and discuss the various uses of courtrooms, potential new types of courtrooms and the degree of flexibility they can offer.  Security, traffic flow, public, legal, and cultural expectations will be addressed.

Tuesday, October 18, 2022 – The Impact of Today’s Technology

 Environment for Technology: Technology is increasingly critical to efficient courtroom use. Effective technology use requires adequate foundations, whether that may be cable accommodation, acoustics, lighting, control systems, sound management, air handling, or temperature control. This session will address what courtrooms need to function properly – with and without cutting-edge technology.

Lessons Learned from the COVID Pandemic: Courts overwhelmingly turned to technology to cope with the COVID-19 Pandemic. This panel discussion session will review the lessons learned and their implications for the future.

Lessons Learned from the Current Times: This panel discussion session will continue the Lessons Learned discussions moving on to the lessons and challenges we are now facing as we return to “normal” and their implications for the future.

Dealing with the Unknown: Our world is rapidly changing. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), increasingly higher video resolution, and holographic displays are creating new opportunities and bigger challenges for the courts. This session will discuss these technologies and planning for what seems to be ever-changing technological opportunities and challenges.

Airport

The nearest airports are the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (17.7 miles, PHF), the Norfolk International Airport* (42.2 miles, ORF), and the Richmond International Airport (45.5 miles, RIC). Taxi service, rental cars, Uber, and Lyft are available for transport to and from the airport.

Uber & Lyft

Uber and Lyft prices for one way from the airports to the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Williamsburg is currently $30, $55, & $60. One way transportation to the W&M Law School from the hotel (4.8 miles) will cost approximately $9. Prices are subject to change and are only estimations.

* Please be aware that landing at ORF will require navigating heavy traffic, including the bridge tunnels, which causes travel times and costs to vary significantly. Most choose to come in through the RIC or PHF.
